The details

What it is, in plain words

A pocket-sized pen that tells you whether a cable, socket or switch has mains voltage on it, without touching the bare metal. Hold the tip near the wire or into a socket slot: if AC voltage is present, the pen beeps and the tip glows red.

  • Voltage range12 to 1000 V AC
  • SignalRed light and beeper
  • Length15.5 cm

It detects alternating voltage from 12 to 1000 V and has a small white LED at the other end for looking into a dark cupboard or behind a fuse box. The pen switches itself off after a few minutes, a pocket clip keeps it with your screwdrivers, and two AAA batteries are in the box.

A tester pen is an indicator, not a measuring instrument. A pen that stays silent does not prove a wire is dead, so switch the supply off at the source and check again before you touch anything.

Bought it before changing a light fitting in the old flat. It beeps loudly near a live wire and the tip glows red, so there is no doubt. I tried it on a socket I knew was live first, as the leaflet says. The little torch at the end is a nice extra.

    The shop replied

Thank you, Radu. Testing on a known live socket first is exactly the right habit. — Widgettrove

does what it says. found a live wire behind an old switch that i was sure was dead, glad i checked

    The shop replied

Good catch, Tomek, and thanks for the review. — Widgettrove

Light, small, clips on a shirt pocket. The beep is loud enough to hear over a radio. Batteries were already inside.

Arrived after 5 days. The call before it was sent was short and clear and I paid the driver at the door. Pen works, no complaints.

    The shop replied

Thanks for the kind words. Glad the delivery went smoothly. — Widgettrove

I am no electrician, I just do odd jobs at home, and wanted something simple. One button, a light and a beep. I still switch off at the fuse board as well. The leaflet is clear that the pen is only an indicator, and I think that is the right way to see it.

    The shop replied

That is the right way to use it. Thank you, Elisabeth. — Widgettrove customer care
